"Action comes about if and only if we find a discrepancy between what we are experiencing and what we want to experience."
—Philip J. Runkel

That quote sums up a core part of painting for me. What keeps me coming back to the ‘blank canvas’ is my desire to realize visually what my mind sees.
Facebook popped up a notification today of that Batman art I did 12 years ago on this very day. Crazy, isn’t it? I can’t even fathom how 12 years past since then.

Looking at that attempt 12 years ago and my revisit last year helps me see how much closer I’m getting to realizing what my mind sees. Or as Philip put it, minimizing the ‘discrepancy between what [I am] experiencing and what [I] want to experience.’
I think it’s healthy to strive to reach the summit, but I also think there’s value in looking back and appreciating how small the parking lot is where we started.
